Abstract EN

Seven cotton genotypes (Rkka5, Aleppo1-33, Aleppo90 - Aleppo 118, Aleppo 40, Deir22, and Line124), were used to estimate variance and genetic and phenotypic correlations between seed cotton productivity and its components [earliness in flowering and maturity(day), plant height (cm), number of vegetative and reproductive branches, number of bolls per plant, 100 seed weight (g), average boll weight (g), lint percentage (%), and plant yield (g)], to be used as selection indices for higher yield performance in breeding programs.

The experiment was carried out in Al-Ghab region (Hama) in 20122013 growing season using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications.

Results revealed highly significant differences among examined genotypes in all studied traits, and contrasting response to the environment, thus increasing the possibility of selecting unique genotypes to be evaluated in further advanced yield trials along with other cultivars grown in the research area.

Cotton yield per plant (g) had a highly significant positive genetic and phenotypic correlations with number of vegetative and reproductive branches and lint percentage.

The respective for genetic correlation coefficients were (r= 0.425**, r=0.352 * and r=0.510**) and for phenotypic correlations coefficients were (r=0.405*, r= 0.261 and r=0.439*).

It was concluded that counting on number of vegetative and reproductive branches and lint percentage (%) can be used as selection indices for higher yielding performance in breeding programs.
