The outcast of black women from the ideal womanhood in Sula, the bluest eye, the color purple, and possessing the secret of joy

This article discusses the role of racism, sexism and classism in the outcast of black women from the hegemonic concept of womanhood in Toni Morrison’s Sula and The Bluest Eye and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and Possessing the Secret of Joy.

Through the lens of black feminism, this paper explores black females’ gender performances, which are mainly related to their roles as wives and mothers, their purity and their beauty, and the extent to which these performances fall outside the traditional standards of womanhood.
