The Spread of internal conflicts after the end of the Cold War was in the context of the growing demands for secession by ethnic minorities.

Identity emerged as a key source in the structural analysis of international relations; it becomes a major source of disputes resulting to new countries as a result of the growth of traditional loyalties.
