Abstract EN
Journalists’ activities on Facebook need to be explored in order to find out to what extent they are related to their work, and how they are adding new insights and tools to it.
According to the Uses and Gratifications theory, this study aims at exploring the uses of Facebook by Jordanian Journalists and to what extent their activities, and gratifications; sought and obtained are related to their work, including building online audiences, and searching for news stories.
To achieve this aim the researchers used an online survey consisting of 28 questions was distributed to purposive sample of 94 Facebook users who are members of the Jordanian press association (JPA).
Results indicated that journalists do activities that are related to their job by using facebook with a mean of 2.91/4; however, they have lack of knowledge and skills to use facebook in the best way in their work.
Journalists used Facebook for reading and following up news more than using it to build audiences and searching for stories.
Journalists’ activities including audience building and story finding on Facebook tended to be passive, which may have resulted in less gains from the site.
Following up news and media pages, expressing opinions freely away from the newspapers’ policy, and sharing content in multiple ways were the highest gratifications sought among the journalists by the sample.
While keeping contact with friends, exploring the public attitude towards an issue, and building relationships that are beneficial to their work were the highest Gratifications obtained.
According to the journalists posts’ contents that got the highest readers' interaction were the ones with smart language and subject, while posts’ shapes that got the highest reader that have photos with comments.
Following users’ updates and facebook pages was the best method to find stories from journalist's perspetives
