English Abstract
The environment is exposed to many factors that affect it negatively.
One of the most important factors is the solid waste.
The problem stems from the difficulty of recycling these wastes and limited reuse.
One of the most important solid waste affecting on the environment is plastic .
Due to the limited space in the Gaza Strip, the problem is aggravated and needs to be solved.
The main aim of this study is to determine the effect of utilize Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) as replacement to sand in the ecologically friendly concrete industry.
The effect of this material has been studied on the physical and mechanical properties of concrete.
A group of 6 concrete mixtures containing PET as partial replacement of sand with replacement ratios 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% by weight.
Concrete specimens (cubes, cylinders and beams) have been cast to determine the behavior of fresh and hardened concrete such as slump test, unit weight, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, pulse velocity and fire behaviour.
The results showed that the use of plastic (polyethylene terephthalate) as an alternative to sand leads to decrease in the unit weight of concrete by 24% compared to normal concrete at a replacement ratio of 50%, thus obtaining lightweight concrete.
Whilst, the addition of plastic has a negative impact on the mechanical properties of the concrete such compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength and pulse velocity.
The fire resistance test showed that the plastic-containing concrete has high permeability, but toxic gases were noted, as well as the odor from samples containing high proportions of plastic.
It can be said that recycled plastics can be used in in nonstructural elements at replacement ratios up to 30%.
Finally, large quantities of plastic waste can be disposed of and contribute to solving one of the environmental problems in addition to reducing the cost of non-industrial concrete and reducing its weight.
