Abstract EN

The ‘definition’ in special dictionaries is an important tool in the realization of specialized languages.

Based on this belief, we have critically examined a sample of definitions that have been attributed to the term "Phoneme" in a number of modern linguistic Arabic dictionaries.

In doing so, we sought to examine how well these given definitions in conceptualizing the term.

We have focused on the extent to which these definitions achieve the accuracy, regularity and clarity required in the specialized language.

The study revealed that the phoneme has been defined by different methods with varying degrees of accuracy; it demonstrated also that specialized definitions are an indicator that best gauges the accuracy of the language concerned.
