Abstract EN

The aim of this study is to estimate the magnitude, causes, and indicators of land degradation in the northern Badia.

To do this, the study used remotely sensed data to delineate land cover information to investigate land change patterns and their impact on land resources.

Further, the study developed a new criterion to estimate the degree of land degradation by incorporating many drivers such as organic matter, soil salinity, and plant coverage.

The results indicate that the study area is witnessing land degradation at different magnitudes.The degradation scale indicates a decline in areas with high and extreme degradation index.

In 1984, the areas with high and extreme degradation represented 48.3% and 48.9%, respectively.

In 2014, these areas substantially decreased to 38.25% and 0.27%, respectively.

On another hand, lands with minimal degradation scale increased between dates.

The study area witnessed dramatic land cover change and policies that minimized land degradation and increased environmental awareness among locals.
