The study of Wadi Arabah estuary has showed that there are three active spits, in addition to two frozen counterparts influenced by human intervention.

The active ones are a strip of loose sand, connected in one end to the mainland and in the other to the sea.

Their granules consist of a mixture of fine, fairly fine, and very fine sand, which is about 98% of the entire sample (mechanical analysis).

They also abound in quartz and calcite, forming 95% of the sample minerals (mineral analysis).

Due to the relative sea-level rise resulting from global climactic changes, the three spits are also in a continual change in terms of length, width, and space.

The study has revealed that the sand spit is so sensitive to the short-term incidents, especially in the latest two years of the respective comparison (2005-2018).

The spits southerly increase, but their developments differ in length and sand space inasmuch as the middle one hits the highest average rate of annual increase (i.e., 37.6m), the northern comes next with 18.6m, and the southern stretches to only 4m.

Space, however, swings between gaining and losing sand in the northern and middle spits while the southern spit loses no sand over the span of comparison.

The rate of sand increase in the northern spit is 2.0 thousand m3 higher than the rate of loss, whereas the rate of sand increase in the middle spit is 17.8 thousand m3.

The average rate of annual sand increase in the southern spit, on the other hand, reaches 14.0 thousand m3.
