this scientific study will analyze the characteristics of operetta in general and analytically compare it with those of the Saudi operetta in particular.

The main purpose of the paper is to draw attention to the genre of Saudi operetta and find out if it matches with the core elements in other civilizations in which it was generated and developed.

It will give an overview of its constituent elements as regards form and content, showing that historically it was regarded as a genuine literary genre.

In addition, two aspects of the operetta will be treated, namely its form of art – that is to say the literary and stylistic characteristics that distinguish it from other literary genres- and its content, so in other words the issues, topics and objectives.

Based on the findings it will be shown in how far the Saudi operetta belongs to the internationally accepted genre or needs to be defined and classified separately.
