The proposed study aims to apply Iser’s concept of “the real reader” to the poem in order to reveal the nature of the effect of the actual recipient on the form and content of the poetic text.

The rāʼiyya of Jarīr praising ʻUmar b.

ʻAbd al-Azīz is selected to be an example that illustrates the nature of the impact of the actual recipient (ʻUmar b.

ʻAbd al-Azīz) on the form and content of the poem.

The study also uses Suzanne Stetkevych’s concept of “the poetics of negotiation” to illustrate the strategy followed by the author (Jarīr) in his negotiation with the recipient (the patron) through the poem.
