This study aims to explore the reality of higher accounting education in Libya and the factors affecting its efficiency and identify its suitability for the labour market requirements.
Therefore, A questionnaire was prepared and circulated among four groups (Academic members, accounting students, accounting graduates, and managers in the labour market).
The findings indicated that there is a weakness in the higher education accounting programs in Libya, in terms of the lack of modern teaching methods that support the quality of accounting education, and there are no programs to develop the skills of accounting faculty members at universities.
Furthermore, the findings show that the current accounting curricula are insufficient to provide students with the requirements of the labour market in terms of skills and necessary expertise, and the absence of the communication between accounting departments and labour market to qualify students to practice the skills required.
This study helps government, higher education officials and accounting faculty members in Libya to pay more attention to higher accounting education to improve its effectiveness and meet the demands of the labour market.
