Abstract EN

Al-Sannubari's elegies of daughters was a unique phenomenon in ancient Arabic poetry, and a departure from long-held habit of lamenting male children and not girls.

This study seeks to analyze the most prominent cultural patterns in this phenomenon and dig deep to reveal other embedded patterns.

Al-Sannubari's elegies of his daughter Laila maintained mainstream cultural patterns that dominated elegies during that period; the first of which is "lamentation", which was one the most expressed theme in Al-Sannubari's poetry for three reasons: The first of these was that Laila was his only daughter, and the second was that he was so agonized by her demise, especially as he was in his 60s, and third was the fact that he belonged to the Shiite sect, which deeply embraces the lamentation for the dead.

The second pattern is the pattern of eulogy, which showed only a small part of the character of Laila and her psychological and moral characteristics, while the third was the pattern of condolence in which the poet surrenders to death and believes she will come one day.

The study concludes that the poet who seemed to have departed from deep-rooted cultural patterns in the collective Arab consciousness and lamented his daughter, could not liberate himself from such mainstream patterns.

Embedded patterns revealed that the poet gave us nothing but a stereotype of a set of virtuous qualities, not a cultural object, an independent self, or a human essence in it.
