Abstract EN

The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London was established in 1916 for imperial ends, such as training British diplomats and civil servants to manage the British colonies, which had spread across the world.

After World War Two, there was a major change in the role of this school, which became more concerned with academic teaching and research.

Thus, the School began to become a university with colleges and departments, one of which was the Middle Eastern Department.

This department has offered many languages and courses related to Arabic as well as Quranic, Hadith and jurisprudence studies.

In addition, the school has played a major role in publishing books and research papers related to the study of the Orient and the Islamic world from the orientalist’s standpoint.

In 1990, the King Fahad Chair of Islamic Studies was established in the Islamic Studies department.

Furthermore, the department established the Journal of Quranic Studies, whose publication is ongoing, and undertook publishing material related to Quranic studies representing the different views of Muslims and non-Muslims worldwide.

This paper examines the history of this journal and its output from its beginnings until today, with a focus on the major issues and topics discussed, the diversity of the contributing authors, the methods they have used, and finally the question of the journal’s impartiality.
