Leaf miner, Liriomyza cicerina Rondani (Diptera; Agromyzidae), is an important pest of chickpea in West Asia, North Africa and southern Europe.

Host plant resistance is considered the most effective management tactic for insect pests.

The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of some chickpea accessions to infestation by leaf miner, Liriomyza cicerina Rondani, and HPLC fingerprinting of chickpea genotypes.

The experiments were conducted at the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas ICARDA, Aleppo, Syria.

Eight accessions were winter and spring-sown during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Infestation severity ranged between 2.7 to 8.25 based on a 0-9 scale.

The lowest severity, during the 2011 and 2012 season, was observed on the accession ILC 5901.

The main chickpea exudates from leave, oxalic and malic acids were found in variable amounts of the genotypes studied, and the highest amount of oxalic acid was found in the resistant genotypes ILC5901 and FLIP 2005-3, whereas malic acid content significantly varied according to genotype and planting date, but was not associated with resistance to leaf miner.

Monitoring the amounts of organic acids, especially oxalic acid, through HPLC can be used to select resistant chickpea genotypes to leaf miner.
