Since its establishment by Sheikh Mawlay Abdullah Cherif El-Wazzani in the middle of the seventeenth century, and until the nineteenth century, the Zawiya of Wazzan had played important functions, social, educational, economic and political.

It became known and its influence expanded inside and outside Morocco, leading to multidimensional relations with the Moroccan political authority (the Makhzen), as well as with other foreign countries.

The Zawiya still attracts the interest of many authors, travelers, and explorers, who have written books and conducted many studies on its history, marabouts, and disciples from various perspectives.

The French Orientalist, Roger Le Tourneau (died in 1971), is one of the most prominent European researchers who wrote about the Zawiya of Wazzan and its relations with Algeria during the French occupation.

He entitled his article: «Algeria and the Sharifs of Wazzan at the End of the 19th Centry».
