Abstract EN

Our Arabic sources paid much intention to the spread of Islam in Sudan in general and the eastern African coast in particular and to embracing Islam by kings of these countries.

However, these sources gave only little information about the spread of Arabic in these countries.

They gave only brief hints about the Arabization process there.

This study exploited these hints to investigate the ways how Arabic spread there and the extent of this.

The study tackled many issues related to the spread of Arabic such as its importance, its superiority over the local languages and the means that contributed to its spread until it became the official language in the Islamic kingdoms there after the conversion of local citizen to Islam.

This process was preceded by the existence of metropolitan centers that contributed to the Arabization and Islamization processes.

These centers, established by individual efforts existed along the eastern African coast and firstly practiced commercial activities and later they were supported by Muslims coming from Arabia and the Arabian Gulf.
