Abstract EN

This research examines the ironic titles of modern Yemeni fiction through analyzing its semiotic levels with the aim of exposing the impact of irony on the narrative text.

Since irony is one of the components of narration, its structure depends on divergent double semiotics that allow readers to interpret.

This can lead them to understand the hidden meanings in the text that is created by the use of irony.

The title is indeed a textual sign that contains different meaning about the complete structure of the text.

This approach of reading exposes the ability of the Yemeni novelists in using the techniques of irony as a rhetoric structure in the text.

In addition to that, it shows their ability in employing irony in a narrative way to uncover the problems of the Yemeni people and life.

At the end of the paper, readers can notice two main functions of irony: the first one is the contradictory narrative enjoyment and the ethical balance that is led by the problems discussed earlier.

Furthermore, the second one is the contribution of irony in restructuring the text.
