Abstract EN

The topic at hand deals with issues of elderly people and the phenomenon of urban area ownership which are of paramount importance in that they need an in-depth understanding and an intricate knowledge of their effects and dimensions so as to establish an urban policy which take care of this important category of society.

Hence, the main objective of this topic is to shed the light on the everyday reality of elderly people in the urban area of the city of Algiers, through probing into their living conditions and their perception of public spaces in order to know how effective they are and how to promote them by endeavoring to incorporate the principle of sustainability in the urban area.

In doing so, elderly people could enjoy quality services and receive the best social and medical care programs with all its physiological and psychological dimensions.

Furthermore, urban development and construction field is one of the important fields where humans can exercise their rights to live in a healthy, decent and quality area, tailored to their own situation under different conditions where social and urban integration can be facilitated.

Considering the fact that this deals with the category which is most susceptible to suffering alongside with the role of public spaces in alleviating or further aggravating their suffering, we thought we would address the topic as follows: 1.

Theoretically examining the topic by stressing the cognitive dimensions of ageing (or senility) and cities known to be friendly to the elderly.

Identifying the way elderly people respond and evaluate public spaces.

3.

Probing more closely by conducting interviews with a group of elderly persons.
