Abstract EN

Journey books are important and rich in historical information, and they may be more important by the diversity of the topics they deal with on the one hand, and the wealth of archival sources and historical works on the other hand.

In many periods, they are considered the most sincere and comprehensive historical sources, as is the case for the Ottoman period in Algeria, especially in its southern part, as this period is generally termed historically dark.

This article deals with the social conditions of the inhabitants of southern Algeria during the Ottoman period, through a famous nomadic source that was known by several names such as: The Ayashian journey, or the maa el-maoid, and the trip of Abu Salem al-Ayashi.

It is a summary of four pilgrimage trips made by the man, the last of which was recorded in the beginning of the second half of the seventeenth century AD, in which he examined the Algerian society of the south, and knew its composition, customs, and cultural and social activities, so his description came accurate and alive that conveys to us the image of this society as if we were live in now.
