The study deals with the urban centers in Upper Egypt's planning regions, which amounted to 90 cities, most of which represent the administrative capitals of their centers in addition to new cities, and cities issued an administrative decision to convert them from village to city.

The study aims to detect spatial distribution of urban settlement in Upper Egypt Planning Regions and the general direction of that distribution, analyzing their geographical situation and their spread, and analyzing their sizes distribution by studying the distribution of rank, size and Primacy Urban of the cities of the study area، and the relationship between the size of these cities and their spacing using GIS
The study relied on quantitative and cartographic method to identify the distribution patterns of cities of Upper Egypt planning regions using several quantitative statistical methods such as central tendency and dispersion measures, and the use of GIS technology to build a spatial and descriptive database of the cities of the study area, And spatial analysis of the distribution of study area cities using statistical analysis tools available in Arc Tools Box The research found that the spatial distribution of urban settlement in Upper Egypt Planning Regions is concentrated, and the directional distribution is north-south.

The study found that most urban settlement spread over 20% of the total study area, therefore It's recommended to establish new cities in the desert hinter land of the governorates of Upper Egypt, and adopt the idea of Passage development to bring balanced regional development
