The decision to nationalize hydrocarbons is one of the important and decisive decisions in the history of the Algerian state that it adopted during almost fifty years, that is: February 24, 1971, and it led to the lifting of the restrictions of economic dependency, by liberating the hydrocarbon sector from the increasing dependence of the French state, through the process of completing economic independence according to For political independence, and thus achieving effective sovereignty over both oil and gas resources.

And the decision has been kept from that period until today, stipulating the most important principle in the law represented in rule 51/49, which gives Sonatrach the dominant share in every investment project in partnership with foreign companies.
