Thyroid swellings are of great importance and should be taken under concern since the malignant changes are increasing.

Most of these swellings are amenable to medical or surgical management.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and patterns of common thyroid swellings at Al-Mukalla district Ibin Sina teaching central hospital, cancer center, central laboratory and private histopathological laboratories, from 1st of January 2011 to 31st December 2012.

Data of thyroid disease were collected from medical records for which included the following data: age, sex, diagnosis, and hormones levels.

A total of 995 registered patients with thyroid disorders were included in the study.

The prevalence was 0.5% with female: male ratio 4:1.

The thyroid disorders mainly occurred in samples of patients at age group of 20-39 years.

Using Chi2 test there was significant difference between patients with thyroid dysfunction regarding gender (p.

value 0.000).

There were no significant differences between males and females regarding almost all hormones levels except hormone levels of T4 among euthyroid goiter (p.

value is 0.003).

The most common swellings was euthyroid goiter (65.6%), followed by hyperthyroidism (14.5%), hypothyroidism (9.7%) and thyroiditis (6.3%).

Malignant changes were found among 3.8% of patients with thyroid diseases.

The prevailing thyroid swellings was euthyroid goiter.

Middle age group (20-39 years) was more affected.
