Front, during and after independence, Algeria knew radical changes in the space distribution of its population, which had a major impact on the rapid growth of the urban population at the expense of the rural areas.

That led us to approach the urban phenomenon from a demographic and statistical point of view and to make of this work organized in two parts, essential tools for many researchers and users of relative data at the Algerian State.

The first treats the definition of the urban areas and the classes adopted in Algeria, as well as various criteria retained at the time of the last census of the population and the housing set up in 2008 to determine the urban character of the area.

The second part presents the urban growth, which is closely related on the population growth on the one hand and the space growth of the other.

The evolution in the time of the urban gatherings was also analyzed according to the general statistics on the population and housing established in Algeria after independence, with an aim of determining the factors of the increase in the rates of urbanization.
