Abstract EN

This paper aims to further establish the long-held Arabic theory in phonetics, which formed the base for contemporary phonology.

The researcher refers to one of the most distinguished tomes in the field of language, namely “Basā'ir Thawi Attamyīz fi Laṭā'if Al-Kitāb Al-Azīz” (Insights of Discerners on Understanding Subtleties of the Glorious Book) by the linguist and lexicographer Fairuzabadi, since his book is a perfect example of theoretical and applied investigation.

This prominent book provides a detailed exploration of phonological study, the discipline in which Arab philologists excelled in very early times.

The research endeavors to elucidate the phoneme and allophones)phoneme different variants), both comprehensively and systematically, through definition of phoneme, phoneme boundaries, places of articulation, and phonological features such as 'Ibdāl (replacing the glottal stop with a vowel), 'Idghām (phoneme assimilation), 'I'lāl (replacing the glottal stop with a semi-vowel), Hamz (pronouncing glottal stops), 'Ishbā' (extreme prolongation of long vowels), 'Imālah (replacing the low front unrounded vowel with mid front unrounded vowel), and Tafkhīm (phoneme emphasis).

Moreover, this study introduces a comparison between the vision(s) of early Arab philologists, such as al-Khalil ibn Ahmad Al-Farahidi, Sibawayh, and Ibn Jinni, and the views of their modern counterparts.
