Abstract EN

The present study attempts to highlight the roles played by women in the Rif uprising (Hirak al Rif in Arabic) in the north of Morocco in the last couple of years.

In doing so, it will shed light on the different forms of protests that women adopted providing the Hirak with an identity, departing from some social claims that became later public concerns expressed in the public space.

The adopted theoretical framework looks at the process of protests as an output of social structures within a given social field and, at the same time, intelligible to social agents who provide them with a meaning as cognitive structures.

The study uses discourse analysis after conducting some preliminary ethnography with some protestors and the local population on their perception of the Hirak.

The main findings of the study show that the women's protest action is framed within the wider protestors' strategies of male-lead mobilization rather than a new gendered phenomenon.

This was, in part, apparent in the gender-based division of presence in the public space despite the unity of concerns and claims, which reflects the conservative nature of the Rifian communities despite the innovative character of the Hirak.
