The presence of irregular military groups in Tunisia was a precursor to the Ottoman presence in them, as some groups have known since the Hafsid era, and these groups also participated in the annexation of Tunisia to the Ottoman Empire and played a prominent role in this framework, and after the establishment of the first nucleus of the Ottoman army in Tunisia, it took place The use of some military groups, such as Zawawa and others, to support this nascent army, and these groups played a major role in building the country and the field in Tunisia, especially in the period of the rule of the Moradians, then the Husaynids.

In the wars and the spread of order and authority, but with the development of the regular army, especially during the era of reform and the attempt to emulate the European model in organizing the army, these military groups that played a major role in all historical stations in the history of the Tunisian army in particular and in de-recognition in général were gradually abandoned.
