Abstract EN

This article discusses the concept of “Counter-Memory” as a philosophical category we claim can effectively contribute in establishing a unique narrative rhetoric.

Counter-memory, as an epistemological system that strives to reorient rhetoric in a narrative discourse, that of the novel, or the novelistic narrative, which is organized through and by a bundle of literary techniques.

In this study, we argue that “Counter-Memory” has reoriented the narrative discourse in I`jaam by the Iraqi expatriate writer, Sinan Antoon.

The concepts of “Counter-Memory” and rhetoric as a bundle of literary techniques produced what we call the “Rhetoric of Resistance.

” In our analysis of the discourse in I`jaam, we attempt to prove and establish how counter memory aided in rooting a rhetoric of resistance against a historical act we call “forgetfulness”
