World university rankings are not just a tool to evaluate higher education institutions' performance; but also a tool to define the global competition.

Thus, it becomes a big challenge to all universities worldwide.

This paper focuses on some of the most popular rankings: ARWU, THE, Webometrics and its main criteria, and how it does affect national policy and institutional strategies to be on top of rankings.

We tried to highlight the opportunities and the chances of Algerian higher education institutions which found to be far behind those of world class universities because of major obstacles that prevent it from showing up in rankings except in one of the three mentioned before, and in the last lines.

les classements mondiaux sont devenus une référence en tant qu'un instrument d'évaluation de la performance des institutions d'enseignement supérieur et de la compétition au niveau national et mondial.

Cet article définissant les classements les plus connus: ARWU, THE, Webometrics; ses critères et les indicateurs utilisés ainsi la manière dont les classements influencent la politique générale et les stratégies institutionnelles pour êtres parmi les premiers.

Cet article traite également les obstacles limitent les chances des institutions d'enseignement supérieure Algériennes qui se trouve mal classée.
