Abstract EN

The question of the United Nations reform, in general, and the Security Council has increasingly become one of the most discussed topics because of the importance, the weight of the Council, as well as the geopolitical changes not only within the UN but also on the global stage.

There have been many proposals to modify the structure of the Council and modernize its working methods.

However, these attempts remained unsuccessful.

This paper attempts to analyse the international context and determine whether it is likely for the reform to take place.

It gives a brief background on the role and the composition of the Security Council and also shows the reasons behind the various calls to renovate the Council, which varies between geopolitical reasons and efficiency-related reasons.

The paper also examines the different attempts for reforming the Security Council since 1945, including those initiated by the organs of the United Nations.

It is also important to determine the challenges that hinder the reform process.
