Psychological dimension in the wine poetry of Al-AkhtalDrinking wine in pre-Islamic poetry was a source of pride for poets, this is besides seeking it and spending money on it, to some it was one of the reasons that makes life worthwhile.

It was permissible and seen as a reflection of manhood and generosity.

Bacchic Poetry was spread throughout their poems with a sense of pride, and none was praised as much as Al-A'sha for seeking wine and drinking it.

However, things were to change with the rise of Islam, when openly drinking was frowned upon as it was a sin.

Thus it was rejected and seen as being discourteous.

Al-Akhtal found this to be a unique poetic opportunity – namely Bacchic Poetry - in which he would say whatever he wishes and supersede his peers, Al-Farazadeq and Jarir.

Critics of those three contemporary poets would say that "Jarir emanates from the ocean, whilst al-Farazdaq engraves rocks, on the other hand Al-Akhtal possesses the finest depictions of wine and donkeys"This paper illustrates that the wine poetry of Al-Akhtal is related to a psychological dimension in the personality of the poet.

This is due to the fact that he was defeated on all other fronts by his peers, he starts looking for an niche were he would stand out and his peers would not be able to compete with him, this is named as Khamriyyat or Bacchic Poetry.
