Abstract EN

Derivation in the Grammar School of Basrah and Its Relation to Derivation in English: A Contrastive Descriptive StudyArabic is considered as one of the creative languages.

It is one of the languages that rely heavily upon generating utterances through raw materials, and through which a great number of utterances ensue.

This linguistic phenomenon of derivation deserved to be cared about and studied by old Arab grammarians, and they termed (Etymology (الاشتقاق.

Among those grammarians were Abu Ali Al-Farsi and his book (As-Sahibi in Language الصاحبي في اللغة ) and Al-Thaalibi author of (The Philology of Language فقه اللغة ).

It is observed that some other languages also adopted this phenomenon, most important among which is English, which is an Indo-European language.

Due to the availability of a common factor between Arabic and English, this study is carried out to study this phenomenon accurately in the two languages.
