In this article, we will discuss the importance of understanding in simultaneous interpreting as the first phase that the interpreter passes through in the translation process, and how to use the appropriate mechanisms to succeed this phase and consequently the success of the communication process in interpreting in the midst of the emergence of contemporary studies combining translation and cognitive sciences.

We will take the example of Johnson Laird's mental models theory and its importance in logical reasoning and in making understanding.

In addition, how it was used by Robin Seton to develop a cognitive- pragmatic model to understand discourse in simultaneous interpreting given that understanding among translators is related to how they construct mental models combining semantic competence and pragmatic competence, which are the basis for the creation of these models
