Criticism, in general, expresses the nature of things and their realities by looking at existence as it exists.

Yet, in literary criticism, it expresses the privacy of individuals and societies 'thinking towards texts of all kinds.

This article aims to address the issue of the development of critical understanding in the West, as we traced its most important intellectual issues by focusing on the Descartes' philosophy who took the cogito as a starting point for self-understanding by advocating objective or rational criticism.

We have tried to project certain problems of Western criticism on the Arab one in order to show the impasse in which Arab critics have signed a dispersion of ranks between fanatics of heritage and defenders of Westernization.

We concluded by exposing their opinions to strategic points of convergence that could be useful for the establishment of a familiar critical identity that combines these deferent intellectual currents.
