The Iraqi Novelist Zaid Al-Shaheed dramatizes in his novel "Year's Horses" a painful chapters of the Iraqi modern history due to the many social, political and economic transformations it witnessed.

This period produced new patterns of social conducts, characters, and experiences which provided the novelist with rich source material for his work.

Al-Shaheed was able to assimilate these changes aesthetically in his a for mentioned novel through a well-knit narrative structure, one in which both the documentary and the artistic sides merge to give the novel its unique form.
