The difficulties of translating the Arabic conjucts (او, و)‎ into English with different functions

Abstract EN

Conjuncts are linguistic devices which define different relations between parts of the text.

These devices help readers to recognize and fully understand the meanings of these texts and how different parts of the text are connected to each other functionally and semantically.

In Arabic, some conjuncts like ( have more than one meaning or function depending on the context.

The meaning of the whole sentence which contains a certain conjunct depends on the meaning of the conjunct itself.

Identifying the function of such a conjunct constitutes a serious problem for the translator who lacks a good command of the source language (the Arabic language) and the realizations of these conjuncts vary according to the intended function and context determines this function and its nearest equivalent.

This study concludes that translating the Arabic conjuncts (او, و) represents a problem for translators, there is no necessarily one-to-one match between Arabic and English conjuncts, Arabic multifunctional conjuncts are reflected in English by different realizations depending on the intended function for each case.
