Ophthalmology is defined as the branch of medical science that deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual pathways including the eye, the optic nerve, and the surrounding areas such as the lacrimal system and the eyelid.

The eye doctor in the Abbasid period treats the eyes and their diseases and refractive errors, This includes treatment of eye diseases from ophthalmology, inflammation, rectification, treatment of black water, white water and other diseases.

Some of the diseases of the eye range from acute to sudden, sub-acute, chronic and diabetic retinopathy.
