Abstract EN

The thesis presents a study into the crisis of text in Iraqi theatre, both in Iraq and in exile, and how this has led to a paralysis, diminishing audience attendance.

It attributes the problem to political, cultural and artistic issues, due to the development of early theatre under the umbrella of left-wing political parties and governmental censorship which stymied internal Iraqi theatre’s natural development, particularly from the late 1970s onwards.

In contrast, the exile of theatre makers in that period lead to the founding of a theatrical practice that was diverse, active and able to give audiences in exile an example of maturity that characterized Iraqi theatre, due to the practitioners’ command of a serious and rigorous theatrical movement.

Nevertheless, these movements in exile continued to face a shared problem with their counterparts in Iraq, that of the text
