Abstract EN

This research paper is dealing with an important topic in the history of Algeria during the period of the French occupation, and mainly the events of May 8, 1945, which have been dealt with by many researchers.

However, one side has been ignored in theses studies.

It is the effective role played by some religious figures in managing and supervising these demonstrations.

Among these figures was Sheikh Rabeh Meddour: the Imam of Abi Dhar Al-Ghiffari Mosque – (Al-Mahatta Mosque).

He was one of the leaders of the May 8, 1945 demonstrations that started from the Al-Mahatta Mosque, he walked with the protestors who claimed the right of the Algerians for self-determination.

But the French authorities faced them with terrible massacres in the city and other various Setif regions.
