Abstract EN

The study of the historical development of the phenomenon is of great importance in geographical studies , as it helps you to understand the reality of the phenomenon and to identify the variation of the factors affecting it throughout its chronological history and from this point of view the research dealt with the development of residential use in the city of Shamiyah for the purpose revealing the factors that contributed to the emergence and development of the city and the distinctive features of its morphological stages in terms of the urban characteristics of the residential building , the pattern of the streets ,the uses of the land and every stage the city went through from its inception in 1844 until the preparation of this study in 2019 and the research relied on the historical approach to achieve this goal through official documents as well as personal interviews.

The administrative factor and the characteristics of the natural location , especially the Levantine river , the fertile soil , had an impact on the emergence of the city and its spatial and urban expansion .

Through its four morphological stages , the city was characteristics and different street patterns from one stage to another according to the civilizational development and the changing economic , social and demographic conditions of the city, s inhabitants.

The research presented a number of recommendations revolving in its entirety on the interest in the city through the correct planning of the use of the land in it in line with its administrative importance and the number of its inhabitants , which must take into account the cultural heritage of the residential buildings.
