Image has many denotations and is exposed to many interpretations, and since the caricature which is characterized by symbolism while transmitting the message, is one type of visual communication that is considered to be more exposed to reading and interpreting.

For this reason the caricaturist is able to deal with the myriad of delicate events in a critical and satirical style, and tris to unveil the truth through his cartoons which put the caricaturist's life in dangers.

Therefore, and in order to escape such dangers and risks, he adapts symbolism as a mean to more freedom and safety to tackle such topics.

Hence, this enables him to deal with some issues that neither the written nore the visual media can deal with.

Thus, the following paper aims, firstly, to read the image in general through presenting an illustration in how an image can be conceived and then interpreted by researchers with different points of view.

Then we will talk about the reading of the image according to the point of view of Roland Barthes who divided the image reading to two levels: denotation and connotation, in addition the linguistic message which performs two functions: fixing and alternation, and in this context we will refer to other researchers such as Martine Joly, group µ, and Albert plecy, after that we will deal with the reading of caricature which has many visual characteristics that enable it to manipulate the receptor through using symbols and involving him in the rest of the interpretation.

Next, we will draw a comparison between the reading of photographic image (whether as a state image or in cinema and television) and the caricature.

Later, we will deal with the meaning and caricature, to see how we can deduct different meanings from the same caricature, we will take “René Magritte” painting called “image betrayal painting” as example.
