This study attempts to shed light on the importance of Cuba to the United States, and to identify the political developments that guided the US-Spanish relations, and how these developments led to the creation of pretexts and arguments for declaring the American war on Spain.

The study revealed that the United States had the intention to declare war against Spain, using the crash of the battleship Maine as a pretext for this, so the island had to follow a policy chosen by the United States according to its ambitions, to achieve the main goal of controlling the isthmus channel, and obtaining a base on the island to secure the province On the canal after its opening.
