Effect of ration supplemention with chamomile, oak leaves and probiotic on antioxidant status and enteric microflora of heat-stressed quail

English Abstract

The current study was carried out to evaluate the effects of heat stressed quail ration supplementation with chamomile, oak leaves, probiotic and antibiotic (colistin) on antioxidant status, stress index and enteric bacterial content.

225 unsexed quail birds (1day aged) were distributed into 5 groups (45 bird/group in 3 replicates 15 birds/replicate) and treated as follows: .

T1 (control): birds were reared on standard ration, T2 birds were reared on standard ration supplemented with 5 gm.

/kg of crushed chamomile, T3birds were reared on standard ration supplemented with 100 gm/kg of crushed oak leaves, T4 birds were reared on standard ration supplemented with 5 gm/kg of probiotic and T5 birds were reared on standard ration supplemented with 0.5 gm/kg of colistin.

The results revealed a significant improvement in antioxidant status as represented by the enhancement of glutathione (GSH) and reduction of malondialdehyde (MDA) in all treatments as compared with control, also the results of chamomile treatment parameters at (P≤0.05).

On the hand, treatments also improved stress index (H/L ratio) significantly as compared with control.

And in regard to the enteric bacterial content, all treatments decreased significantly Salmonella and E Coli compared with control, and probiotic treatments caused a significant increase in Lactobacillus as compared with all other treatments and control.

Meanwhile, colistin and chamomile treatments courses the liner effects on lactobacillus count of intestinal content.

In conclusion, all treatments alleviate heat stress effects and improve antioxidant status and interic microflora.
