Abstract EN

The occurrence, growth, reproduction and food habit of Himri, Carasobarbus luteus (Heckel, 1843) in the Al-Diwaniya River, were studied during November 2016 to October 2017.

Water temperature varied from 10.2oC in March to 32.8oC in August.

A total of 1319 fish were collected using different fishing gears.

luteus constituted about 29.8% from the total catch.

The length-weight relationship for fish sizes 8-30 cm TL was W = 0.0133 x L3.047).

The mean relative condition factor was 0.79 for small fish, 0.95 for male and 0.96 for female.

The lengths of fish were 10.5, 16.4, 19.9, 23.2, 25.9, 27.9 and 29.3 cm at the end of 1-7 years, respectively.

The growth model of the species was Lt= 35 (1-e -0.26 (t-0.489)).

The growth performance index (ø) of C.

luteus was computed as 2.50.

The overall sex ratio (male: female) was1: 1.5.

The highest values of gonado- somatic index (GSI) were 13.7 and 7.8 in April for females and males, respectively, and this referred that the spawning season of this species was take place in this time.

Study declares that the species is a herbivore feeding mainly on aquatic plant (40.3% ), algae (39.1% ), snails (11.0% ) and aquatic insects (8.5% ).
