The subject of storytelling is considered one of the most important achievements of humanities research in the twentieth century, as storytelling focused on the components of narrative discourse, its appearances, structure, and semantic levels, so that research in this area of knowledge was organized into two streams: the linguistic narrative stream (structural analysis of narrative discourse), and the semantic narrative current (semiotic analysis of narrative discourse).

Gérard Jeanette was able, through a study of time, to harmonize a methodology of study of the temporal structure, he examined the quality of the relationship that exists between the time of history and the time of discourse through three levels: chronological order, permanence and frequency.
