Abstract AR

This study aims to investigate the long and short term relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in Libya during the period 1980-2016 by applying Johnson co integration test and vector error correction model.

Additionally, Granger causality test is also applied to examine the causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth.

The study resulted that there is a relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in the long term.

The error correction coefficient shows that deviation from long run GDP path is corrected by about 59% over the following year .There was unidirectional causality runs from oil consumption to economic growth and unidirectional causality runs from economic growth to electricity consumption.

Based on the output of Granger causality test, the changes in the oil consumption help explain the changes which occur in the economic growth; while, the changes in the economic growth help clarify the changes that happen in the electricity consumption.
