Abstract EN

The present paper aims at showing the extent of deformations that affecting punctuation marks in the narrative prose, by using one of the different Deforming Tendencies proposed by the French theorist and critic Antoine Berman.

We particularly mention the deformation of rhythms i.e.

punctuation marks, as proposed by him, which will be applied in the English translation of Naguib Mahfouz’s novel "The Thief and the Dogs'' (Alliss wa Alkilab), in which the extreme importance of punctuation marks will be highlighted, as well as its impact, according to Berman, in maintaining the meaning and rhythm of narrative prose, by comparing and analyzing between examples from the original text and its translation into English.

We have focused on the most mentioned punctuation marks in the novel which are: The ellipsis, the exclamation mark, the question mark, the comma and the period.
