Abstract EN

This study analyzes the political bases for the unification of Yemen in 1990, which was reached by peaceful accord between the two Yemeni states.

While both states agreed to a power-sharing formula on a 50-50 ration, the demographics were quite eschewed, roughly on an 80-20 split.

A united Yemen does form a natural geographical, linguistic and ethnic entity, which was formed on 22 May 1990.

However, this study ascertains that one of the most significant factors propelling unification was the expansionary' ambition of the respective leaderships of the two states, which had been joined but not merged.

Both were maneuvering at the time to expand their power base.
