Abstract EN

This study identifies social factors important for recovering drug-addicts to successfully return to the community.

A structured interview was administered to a sample of 45 male drug-addicts undergoing treatment in the Al-Amal Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The interview elicited information on social problems perceived by the study group to have negatively impacted their attempts to adjust psycho-socially to successful re-entry into society.

The data were analyzed statistically through means, frequencies, chi-square, one-way analysis of variance and by Scheffe's test.

Eight problem areas or factors were identified which negatively affected their readjustment progress.

Family rejection and inability to find a suitable job headed the list.

When participants divided into three subgroups according to type of addiction {i.e.

alcohol, heroin, and multi-drugs), significant differences clustered for each group for specific factors.

The study makes recommendations and suggests further lines of study.
