Preparation and studying the flame retardancy of novolac–ceramic composites

Novellas resin which is, intumescening on contact with a flame due to the emission of curing, pyrolyting and combustion gases, forming solid carbonaceous foam, was used as a matrix in a composite mixture reinforced with ceramic particles (kaolin, alumina, silica, and limestone).

The composites were used as flame retarding paints for coating easily burning surfaces like wood, and protect them from reaching the ignition temperature for periods of time, depending on the paint layer thickness, composite composition, and the weight percent of ceramic particles.
