يتم تشريع القوانين المتعلقة بأخلاقيات علم الأحياء في الدول الغربية بناء على القانون المدني أو قوانين الصحة العامة.
و على النقيض يعتمد أتباع الديانات التوحيدية بالإضافة إلى ذلك تعاليمهم الدينية.
و من بين المشكلات التي تثير قضايا أخلاقيات علم الأحياء نذكر وسائل منع الحمل و إنهاء الحمل و الإجهاض و الإنجاب بمساعدة طبية و أبحاث الجنين و زراعة الأعضاء و الرعاية العلاجية بدون فائدة و موت الرحمة.
و يعتبر موت الرحمة أو القتل الرحيم الذي يمارس خفية موضوع مثير للجدل للأطباء و لرجال الدين على حد سواء.
فيشير القتل الرحيم أو القتل بدافع الشفقة إلى الفعل الطبي المتمثل في قتل شخص عن عمد من أجل تجنب معاناة أمراض مستعصية غير قابلة للشفاء.
فقضية القتل الرحيم هي مشكلة اجتماعية تتطلب تحليل و مقارنة التعاليم الدينية لإمكانية تبني رأي ديني موحد.
